CFB & NFL Notes 9/24 - 9/25

Wisconsin @ Michigan State –

These are the types of matchups that allow the Big 10 to claim the status as the strongest conference in American this year.

Coming off the victory over Wisconsin, Michigan State gets the chance to show they’re a contender to repeat as the Big 10 champion…which is an automatic playoff birth this year.

This will be as blue collar as it gets.  Michigan State is 13th in the country in terms of running the football.

Wisconsin who was 2nd in the country in fewest rushing yards per game allowed, is 8th so far this year.  Michigan State has been solid thus far against the run as well.

Wisconsin has an issue as RB Corey Clement isn’t fully healthy due to an ankle injury.  He’s practicing but he’s not at 100%.  Against the Michigan State front 7…featuring DE Malik McDowell and LB Riley Bullough… this is not a game to try and go with a  busted wheel.

Florida @ Tennessee –

11 straight wins for Florida.  Which sounds impossible.

Florida Austin Appleby now gets the start in place of injured Luke Del Rio.

Florida is statistically, the best defense in the country.  #1 in total defense.  #1 in points per game.  Florida has a good shot to win on the road by exposing Tennessee’s biggest issue.

Tennessee is sloppy with the football.  11 total fumbles, 10 they have recovered.  If they lost at 50% rate, they fall is 113th in the country in giveaways.

Pittsburgh @ Philadelphia –

In a league with parity, you’re not supposed to have wildly different experiences in talent playing week to week.  Philadelphia is about to experience just that.

Philadelphia currently has the best defense in all of football, and Chip Kelly being gone is a big part of that.  Last year the Eagles held the ball for 25 mins a game on average.  This year, they’re holding it for 37 mins…a big part of that is playing the very poor offensive teams in Chicago and Cleveland.

Pittsburgh is wildly different.  Pittsburgh’s biggest issue in recent years has been a porous defense that forced an explosive offense to score constantly.

This year, Pittsburgh is among the league leaders in points per drive offensively and fewest points allowed per drive defensively.

If the Steelers have an Achillies heal defensively, they’re not sacking opposing quarterbacks enough.  They’re tied with the Atlanta Falcons for last in the league in total sacks with just 1.  It’s the one championship component that they’re missing…so we’ll watch that over the course of the year.

This should be fun to watch as Carson Wentz, who’s size and ability gives him some Big Ben like qualities when he was a younger player…trying to keep up with the actually Big Ben offensively.

San Diego @ Indianapolis -

Is it possible that a quarterback has been so poorly protected and so poorly built around that even his best play isn’t good enough?

That’s the early fear for fans of Andrew Luck of the Colts.  Luck had a tough year last year with the injuries and the amount of times he gave the ball away.  It was very un-Luck-like.

This year luck has 5 TD’s and just 1 interception, and while he’s just under 60% in passing, this year is shaping up to be Luck’s best as an NFL QB.

The defense in Indy though, is awful.  They’re 30th in the league in total D, and 32nd in points allowed per game.  Even with great offensive production, that’s a recipe for a 7-9, 8-8 season.

The Chargers have been coming out and putting a ton of points on their opponents over the first two weeks of the season.  Unfortunately the Chiefs came back in the 2nd half of the season opener…but the Chargers have outscored their opponents this year in the first half by a score of 42-3.

Chicago @ Dallas –

This is supposed to be a layup, right?  Dallas is 1-1, and is doing what they need to do to win games.

Dak Prescott has been impressive in his ability to management games and give his team a chance to win.  Dallas defense isn’t great, but the Cowboys ball control style puts them amongst the league leaders in TOP.  Dallas has only defended 19 drives from their opponents, 2nd fewest in the league.

Despite Chicago’s injuries, Dallas can always be Dallas in these types of games.  Dallas has lost its last 8 home games.  ESPN had the note on how Dallas hasn’t won a home game without Tony Romo since Dec of 2010.

I went back even further, Dallas has only won two homes games without Tony Romo since Cowboys stadium opened in 2009.

The last 12 times Dallas was a 7 point favorite, which they are, they’re 2-10 against the spread.  Now they’ve won those games, but they haven’t been as easy as you would think.  This one screams EASY win by NFL standards…but there’s no such thing with Dallas.

Takeaways - NFL Week 2

The importance of getting off the a decent start:

Percent of Teams with these W-L records to make NFL playoffs (since 1990)

2-0 63%

1-1 41%

0-2 12%

Falcons QB Matt Ryan is currently the highest rated passer in the NFL with a 121.4 QB rating.  More importantly, Ryan is currently leading the NFL in average yards per attempt with 10.0.  By comparison, Philip Rivers is the 3rd highest rated passer in the league and averaged 7.72 per attempt.

Falcons sack watch: The Falcons are currently tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for last in the league in sacks.  Vic Beasley Jr. credited with the sack when Derek Carr ran out of bounds.

Saints QB Drew Brees has passed Dan Marino for 3rd-most passing yards in NFL history, trailing P. Manning & Favre. (433, 508, 539)

The New York Giants are the 1st team to win a game with no offensive TDs & a TO diff of minus-3 or worse since Chicago beat Arizona 24-23 in 2006.

The Panthers have the longest home winning streak in the NFL with 11 straight wins. They've averaged 40.6 PPG in their last 5 home games.

Kim Newton now has as many career games with four passing touchdowns as all other Panthers QBs combined. (4 in 80 starts vs 4 in 258 starts)

The Cardinals & Panthers each scored 40+ points today. They have the most 40-pt games since the start of 2015. (5 for Cardinals, 3 for Panthers)

(ELIAS) - Cowboys QB Dak Prescott’s 75 pass attempts without an interception are now the most to start a career in NFL history.  Previous: Warren Moon 72.

Alfred Morris has as many rushing touchdowns against the Redskins today (1) as he did in 16 games last season WITH the Redskins.

Dallas is the 2nd worst team in NFL in 3rd down conversions given up.  But 17th in the league in total D and 12th in points allowing just 21.5 (4th in time of possession, allowing just 19 drives to opposing offenses)

The San Diego Chargers play in the Georgia Dome on October 23rd.  They have outscored opponents 42-3 in the 1st half this season. They were outscored 30-6 by the Chiefs after halftime last week.

The Amazing JJ Watt:

(ESPN) Watt recorded his 13th fumble recovery since the start of the 2011 season. No one else has more than 10 in that span.

Rams beat the Seahawks 9-3.  The Rams win with single-digit points and no touchdowns for the second time. The other win was in 1969. - Russell Wilson's 17-game streak with a passing TD is snapped. It was the longest active streak, which now belongs to Blaine Gabbert (12).

Isaiah Crowell's 85-yard TD is the second-longest rush into Browns history, longest since 1959.

The Browns led the Ravens 20-2 after the first quarter. That's their largest lead after one quarter since 1961 against the Cowboys.

CFB & NFL Notes 9/17 - 9/18

Ohio State @ Oklahoma

It’s a good thing that Ohio State has experience at quarterback with JT Barrett.  Because if there’s one thing Oklahoma has been able to do so far this season, is have success against opposing running games.  Even though OU lost to Houston, that game was about the Cougars making plays in the passing game.  Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer noted this as well this week.

For OU, when is their running game going to get going?  They’ve dealt with some injuries and decisions to throw the football on early downs so far this year…which explains why Samje Perine and Joe Mixon has thus far just combined for 38 carries.  That should be 60-65 after two games.  It’s a temptation that makes sense as Baker Mayfield is the nation’s 5th rated paser.

Mayfield creates such issues for teams defensively that the Sooners have put the ball in his hands more so than trusting their great running backs.  But Ohio State’s most impressive unit thus far has been their secondary, with their D having already intercepted seven interceptions.

Ohio State might be more talented overall, but their young.  And Norman is not a place you want to be young at.  This should be a fun one.

Michigan State @ Notre Dame

Young players progress and improve over the course of their collegiate careers.  Irish QB Deshone Kizer has taken another big step forward in his career and is doing the types of things that gets NFL scouts excited about his prospects.

Kizer is already big.  Kizer can already move.  Where Kizer has really improved is with how he’s taking care of the football.

2015:                                                  2016:

62.9% passer                                     71.4%

21-10 (TD/INT)                                (7-1)

Kizer is the 4th highest rated passer in CFB.  And given the Notre Dame schedule, this game against Michigan State sets them up to roll into mid October when they face Stanford in South Bend on Oct 15th. If the Spartans are going to sneak out an upset here, they’ll have to do it by attacking a Notre Dame secondary that has been decimated by injuries and some team disciplinary issues.

But who the Spartans are this year is certainly not clear, as they have only played a Furman team that hung around for way too long.

For anyone who thought that Notre Dame’s season was in trouble after a 2 OT loss in Austin…this thing is just getting started.

Bengals @ Steelers

The main talking point is about how bitter this rivalry is after the playoff loss last season when the Bengals came unglued.  But there’s so much more to just that ballgame.  This has been a series in which the Steelers have established themselves in the heads of Bengals players.

2013 (1-1)

2014 (0-2) Bengals lost 5 games this year, 2 were to Pittsburgh.  11-3-1 against everyone else.

2015 (1-2) lost 5 games, 2 of them to Steelers…including the playoffs.

Especially in 2015, the Steelers forced the Bengals into mistakes they simply don’t typically make.  We brought up before how the Bengals in 2015 were one of the best teams in the entire NFL at taking care of the football…

…but that changes against the Steelers.  Of the Bengals 17 total turnovers, 5 of them in the regular season came against the Steelers.  4 more came in the playoffs.  The Steelers haven’t been exceptional on defense in recent years, but they create turnovers against the Bengals.

Packers @ Vikings

I love Vikings coach Mike Zimmer.  I love the mentality that he coaches with and the way he has positioned his team to not give up on a long season because quarterback Teddy Bridgewater went down.  Here’s the simple view of what Bridgewater was last year: he was good at being exactly what the offense needed.  14-9 INTS and just 3,200 passing yards.

That’s what the Vikings will be asking for from Shaun Hill, and eventually Sam Bradford.  While Shaun Hill did not play at a Bridgewater level last week against Tennessee, he also didn’t turn the football over.

Making life miserable on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is what the Vikings will attempt to do once again as they did to win the division last season.  The Vikings sacked Rodgers a total of 7 times last season, including 5 times in the deciding game at Lambeau field.

The Vikings got the benefit of 2 defensive touchdowns last week… they have to find a way to create some easy points against the Packers until their quarterback play gets back up to an average NFL standard.
