Takeaways - NFL Week 4

Odell Beckham Jr.

Odell Beckham Jr.

Quite the start: Falcons running back Devonte Freeman has become the first player since the NFL-AFL merger to score three touchdowns in his first two starts.

The Miami Dolphins fired Coach Joe Philbin after their 1-3 start to the season.  The Dolphins had one coach, Don Shula, from 1970 to 1995.  Since 1996, the Dolphins have had eight head coaches.  The team has now fired three coaches during the season over this time: Philbin, Dave Wannstedt (1-8 in 204), and Tony Sparano (4-9 in 2011).

What never helps you as a coach:  The Miami Dolphins have been outscored in the first quarter this year by a score of 37-3.

(ESPN Stats and Info) The New Orleans Saints got their first win over the season last night against the visiting Dallas Cowboys in over time.  Saints running back CJ Spiller makes the game winning catch and run from 80 yards out.  Before that play, his previous longest reception was for 19 yards.

(ESPN Stats and Info) Peyton Manning is 4-0 for the 7th time in his career.  Manning now has the most amount of 4-0 starts for a quarterback in league history.

Philadelphia Eagles running back DeMarco Murray has told the media that he needs the ball more.  Murray signed a contract that pays him 8.5M per season with the Eagles after averaging 28 touches per game last season with the Dallas Cowboys.  Murray currently has 40 total touches in the three games he has played in.

New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr is part of the perfect storm.  OBJ plays on a team with a quarterback who is passing capable and the team has trailed in a lot of ball games over the last two seasons.  What has that meant for OBJ?  Beckham’s 1,612 receiving yards through 16 games is the most in NFL history for a receiver starting his career.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is getting Jim Harbaugh paid.  The regression for Kaepernick continued on Sunday vs the Green Bay Packers.  Kap was 13-25 for 160 yards and one interception.  Of those 13 completions, only three went for five yards or more. (SB Nation)

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith threw for 386 yards on Sunday in a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.  But one thing, he didn’t throw a touchdown pass.  That’s the 3rd highest amount of yards in NFL history without throwing a touchdown pass.  (SB Nation)

Weird leaders:  Quick, name the NFL quarterback who is also his team’s leading rusher…The Seattle Seahawks will look to even their record at 2-2 tonight against the Detroit Lions.  The Seahawks have been banged up at running back as Marshawn Lynch has had a hamstring, Fred Jackson has been limited, and Thomas Rawls is inexperienced.  The team’s leading rusher is currently quarterback Russell Wilson with 24 carries for 137 yards.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is 2nd on his team with 195 rushing yards.  Jonathan Stewart leads the Panthers with 220 yards thus far.
